Tech Boston
Story aired: Wednesday, March 09, 2005

Billionaire Bill Gates says America's public high schools are obsolete and speaking before a conference of governors last month. He said that when he compares U.S. high schools to those he sees abroad, he is terrified for the workforce of the future.

Tom Vander Ark is in charge of education at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. which is calling for much smaller schools with much higher standards.

And they're backing their call with money. Over the years the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has poured more than $2 billion into schools across the country, much of it to help develop small schools, like several in Boston.

We visited the Tech Boston Academy, a three year old public pilot school that's partly funded by the Gates Foundation. Just over 200 students go there and its one of three new schools in what used to be one old cavernous high school building in Dorchester.

Guests:

Students, Teachers and Headmistress of Tech Boston Academu.
