Iraq Shooting Sparks Tension Between U.S. and Italy Story aired: Monday, March 07, 2005
Tens of thousands of Italians paid their respects in Rome today to the Italian intelligence agent who was killed by U.S. soldiers in Iraq on Friday, just after negotiating the release of Italian journalist.
Journalist and former hostage Giuliani Sgrena says that the car they were in wasn't going very fast as it drove the notoriously dangerous road to the Baghdad airport. She claims U.S. troops fired without warning and suggests she may have been deliberately targeted.
The Bush administration says that charge is absurd, but the incident has heightened anti-war sentiment in Italy, where officials are weighing a murder investigation. The incident also renewed questions about the safety of U.S. checkpoints in Iraq.
